It's Prime Time: Will The Real You Step Up?
Prime time. Many of us of a certain age have unfortunately believed that our best years were behind us. Those best years included having children, building a career, learning to experience life as an independent adult after the training and restrictions of being children. Then here come the decades, slowly at first but then they speed up. I don't know about you, but it feels like one minute I was dancing with my future husband in a club and in the blink of an eye we were dancing at our son's wedding. While those years that I call the period of diapers, decisions and detours, had the intensity that might feel like the prime of life… we learned there was much more.
I want to challenge you, however, that prime time is in front of you right now. No matter what age you are as you read this, there are opportunities to show up in the brilliance that is uniquely yours. As we look around us, we see women who have experienced births and deaths, marriage and divorce, children and grandchildren, abundance and loss. What do all these different experiences “bring up for you”? That's a question we ask a lot in coaching. Some of those experiences resulted in shame, condemnation, and a drawing back from anything that looked too big or too important for you. For some of us, being undervalued was the norm and our default setting.
If you will, lets look at how to reframe some of those mindsets.
My dad had a saying that went like this: “Some things you learn just while sitting by the side of the road”. To translate, he was talking about the knowledge that simply comes from being alive for a certain number of years. You didn't do anything to pursue that knowledge, but there are some things you just know because of life. That knowledge, even though you didn't pursue it, helped create the framework of wisdom that you operate in today. There are other lessons -- painful ones -- that also paid you dividends in knowledge, insight and compassion. Just because the lessons hurt doesn't mean they weren't valuable. There are some skinned knees and bruised elbows, metaphorically speaking, that have given you unusual courage and the ability to get back up no matter what. Those are not small things.
So, what will you do with the time right now? Maybe your answer is already sitting in a drawer somewhere — a book half-written, a business card you haven't ordered yet, a service you've been quietly perfecting for other people and calling a "hobby." If that's you, we'd love to help you stop minimizing that dream. Prime Time Makeover is starting our second season of conversations about your life, your brilliance, your emotions, and your faith — and there's room in it for what you're building too. If you have a product, service, book, or business you believe in, let's talk about partnering and growing it together.
